Army scientist creates a water planning app for sports medicine.
FRANKLIN, Mass. (November 9, 2017) – Sports Science Synergy, LLC, has created the first-ever Road Race Water Planner© app (RRWP) to provide easy and accurate estimates of water and drinking cup needs for road races. RRWP handles the uncertainties of water planning related to weather, participant numbers, and race distance to help minimize race risks, waste, and costs.
RRWP uses a patent-pending algorithm known as H 2 Q Technology™ to accurately estimate water needs for all runners in a race. Planners are required to input just four sources of information—air temperature, race distance, number of runners, and number of water stations. App outputs include total water needs in gallons, total number of cups, and amounts for both at each water station.
International beta testing of the app, which was completed in July 2017, included John Cianca, MD, Chevron Houston Marathon medical director since 1998. “The app p rovided me with a quick and accurate way to estimate our cup needs for the course given the number of runners we expect for our races," reported Cianca.
According to Tom Naylor, event director of the Brighton Marathon Weekend, “ Providing sufficient fluid so participants can safely complete a road race is an event organizer’s number one priority and being able to accurately plan fluid provisions in different temperatures is extremely important.” The Road Race Water Planner gives organizers confidence that they have planned effectively and can cope with changing weather conditions.
The tools provided by RRWP complement the vast experience and decision-making processes of road race professionals such as Cianca and Naylor, and others. The need for a ccurate water and cup estimates is also consistent with growing sustainability initiatives aimed at incorporating environmentally and socially responsible practices into the operational planning, preparation, and execution of road races.
Sports Science Synergy, LLC, is owned and operated by Army hydration science expert Samuel N. Cheuvront, PhD, RD. Dr. Cheuvront was part of the team that created the Soldier Water Estimation Tool (SWET) app in 2014 to improve military potable water planning logistics ( www.army.mil/article/136391 ).
“SWET is very military-centric,” says Cheuvront. “After receiving multiple inquiries about the app from sports-oriented industries, I saw a need to solve similar water planning challenges for sport in the civilian population and, therefore, created the Road Race Water Planner app.”
RRWP is now available on the App Store® for iPhone® and iPad® platforms itunes.apple.com/us/app/rrwp/id1249618165?ls=1&mt=8 . Read more about RRWP and find the answers to frequently asked questions at www.sportssciencesynergy.com
