Sanjay Sharma is Professor of cardiology and head of research for the clinical and academic group at St George’s University of London and St George’s NHS Foundation trust.  His interests include cardiovascular adaptation in athletes, sudden cardiac death in the young and heart muscle diseases for which he has an international reputation and has published over 170 papers. 

He was the lead cardiologist for the 2012 London Olympics. He is currently chairman of the ESC sports cardiology nucleus and the Medical Director for The Virgin London Marathon. 

Professor Sharma is also the cardiologist for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and leads the largest pre-participation screening programme for cardiac diseases in young athletes. 

Professor Sharma cardiology advisor for the English Institute of Sport, British Rugby Union, Lawn Tennis Association and the GB rowing squad, and chairs the expert cardiology committee for the Football Association.  

Professor Sharma enjoys teaching and is the senior tutor for the MRCP part 2 written programme for the Royal College of Physicians.
